Job Title: Family Advocate
Status: Full-time, Exempt
Reports to: Operations Manager/MDT Coordinator
Position Description: Responsible for scheduling services at SCCAC and providing a home-like atmosphere to primary and secondary crime victims and their family members at interview and appointment times; maintains an assigned caseload and respond to the emotional and physical needs of primary and secondary crime victims by providing the following direct services:
- Crisis counseling/intervention;
- Assistance with Alabama Crime Victims’ Compensation Commission applications;
- Follow-up contacts & crisis counseling via phone with non-offending caregivers;
- Family support sessions/parent conferences and any additional wrap-around services/resources to families;
- Assists primary and secondary victims of crime in understanding the dynamics of victimization and provides stabilization in their lives after victimization;
- Provides criminal justice support and advocacy to primary and secondary crime victims;
- Accompanies crime victims to criminal court proceedings and forensic medical exams as needed;
- Makes appropriate referrals, including medical referrals, to other human service agencies, based on crime victims’ needs;
- Acts as student interns’ Task Supervisor;
- Presents cases at Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Meetings and maintains required documentation of meetings;
- Attends Family Advocate Peer Review and other meetings/trainings as required by local/state/national membership or accrediting entities;
- Provides the following services, which are necessary and essential to ensure that quality direct services are provided:
- Maintains agency data via the NCATrak and Outcomes Measurement Survey (OMS) System;
- Completes programmatic documentation, reports, and statistics in a timely manner;
- Attends staff meetings;
- Maintains accurate account of work activities for personnel evaluations and grants;
- Promptly reports any urgent issue regarding child safety or abuse to Executive Director and DHR (Department of Human Resources) and law enforcement;
- Attends related trainings, obtains continuing education credits;
- Keeps abreast of current issues regarding child abuse;
- Assists in community awareness events;
- Other duties as assigned by Direct Supervisor and/or Executive Director
Qualifications:
Minimum requirements: Bachelor’s degree in social work or psychology, or related field*. (License preferred). Must have working knowledge of the dynamics of child abuse and the legal system; ability to testify in court; ability to engage children of all ages; experience in facilitating groups; ability to complete necessary administrative and case management records; strong organizational skills; ability to work independently and with various teams; ability to work flexible hours; ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing; computer proficiency; and ability to promote the mission and goals of the Shelby County Child Advocacy Center.
*Applicants degreed in related fields that do not specify a guiding code of ethics must adhere to ethical standards as set out by the organization’s state membership guidelines and national accrediting body.
